Advantages of Going to a Small Rural College

I recently read a blog post in which a young man was lamenting about the fact that he had been admitted to a ‘boring’, small rural college. From the tone of his blog post, it was clear that he would have preferred to go to a big college in a major city. I had, of course, to concur with him on the fact that going to a small rural college has its downside. But what he seemed to be blind to was the fact that going to a small rural college has its advantages too. Those advantages (of going to a small rural college) will be the focus of today’s blog post: as I endeavor to enlighten the young man — and others like him.

One advantage associated with small rural colleges is in the fact that the students in such colleges tend to get personalized attention from their instructors. On the other hand, in the big colleges that are found in major cities, the numbers of students tend to be so huge that the instructors often have to use loud-speakers when conducting lectures! In such circumstances, asking for personalized attention would be outrageous.

Another advantage associated with small rural colleges is in the fact that the students in such colleges get to bond very well. On the other hand, the students in the big colleges that are found in major cities often fall into loneliness. That happens due to the fact that the major cities tend to be urban jungles: where everyone is looking out for his or her own interests. So, in the big city colleges, you end up with an ironical situation: where one experiences intense loneliness in the midst of a huge sea of humanity!

Yet another advantage associated with small rural colleges is in the fact that the students in such colleges have fewer temptations to waste money (compared to the students in the big colleges found in major cities). In fact, a student in a small rural college may be able to finance his or her lifestyle using earnings from any part-time job they may find. Thus, for instance, if the student gets a part-time job at Walmart, the amount in the Walmartone paystub may turn out to be enough to finance that student’s lifestyle. On the other hand, the students who go to the big colleges in the major cities have to deal with very high costs of living. Some end up sinking knee-deep in debt, as they try to raise money to finance their expensive college lifestyles in the major cities.
